Metro says maintenance work that closed five red line Metro stations this holiday weekend is on schedule and that the stations are expected to reopen on time.

The stations are scheduled to reopen Tuesday at 5 a.m. The Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont stations shut down at 10 p.m. Friday so that workers could do major maintenance. Workers are replacing two old track switches at the Silver Spring station and installing new track and new tunnel safety lights.

In addition, workers are installing new fiber optic communications cables to support upgraded cell phone access in the system. Improving cell phone access is a Congressional mandate.

Finally, new heater tape is being installed to help improve rail conditions when ice and snow is expected.
