Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling announced Tuesday that Virginians can make a difference by joining the AARP, Ruritans and Federation of Virginia Food Banks in supporting a community food drive this weekend. The press conference announcing the initiative was held at the Central Virginia Food Bank in Richmond.
“September 11 is a day we will always remember in the history of our country. However, this year we have a chance to also do something positive on this memorable day that will help improve the lives of our fellow man. We have a chance to get involved and help feed the hungry, an act that will show the true spirit of Americans to reach out and help those in need. I encourage every Virginian to find a way to participate in this important program,” says Bolling.
He joined AARP, Ruritan and food bank officials to encourage Virginians to support the food drive, which is being held on the National Day of Service and Remembrance Saturday. More than 170 sites statewide will accept food donations on that day, and all food donations will stay in the local community.

“Virginia food banks help feed hungry people in local communities every day,” says AARP Virginia State Director Bill Kallio. “AARP is calling upon our more than one million members in Virginia to come out on September 11 and help the food banks provide this valuable assistance.”
Roughly six million Americans age 60 and older don’t know where their next meal is coming from and Virginia ranks 22nd for seniors at risk of hunger. This is the second year AARP and Ruritans have joined forces to help stock Virginia’s food banks.
“I believe persistence is the key to accomplishing most objectives in life,” says Jerome Rodes, Ruritan National President. “My motto for this year has been ‘People of Persistence Keep On Pumping.’ The effort we exert in this food drive will pay huge dividends for those who need it most. Thanks to all who will give their time and resources to make it happen.”
“Food Banks are experiencing a historic surge in demand for assistance during these economically challenging times. The collaboration of AARP & Ruritan members in supporting food banks on such a special day will make a huge difference for those in need throughout Virginia,” says Leslie Van Horn, Executive Director of the Federation of Virginia Food Banks.
AARP launched “Create The Good” to help people find meaningful volunteer opportunities, and to help organizations find the help they need.
