An upcoming ban on the disposal of electronic equipment in West Virginia landfills has state and local agencies looking to create recycling programs.
Beginning January 1, televisions, computers and electronic devices with video screens four inches and larger cannot be put in landfills.
The Legislature approved the ban earlier this year at the urging of bill sponsor Sen. Karen Facemyer.
The Jackson County Republican says the goal is to keep potentially harmful items out of landfills and create a source of products for recycling companies.
A spokeswoman for the state Solid Waste Management Board says the agency is working with groups to develop a diversion plan for electronics.
The board has been working to divert electronics from state landfills since 2002.
