First Meetings Set for VA Uranium Study Committee

A committee studying uranium mining in Virginia will hold its first three meetings in Washington, D.C. and the Danville area.

"The Danville Register & Bee" reports that the Danville area meeting is scheduled for December 13 through 15.

The Washington meetings are set for October 26 and 27 and November 15 and 16 at the Keck Center.

The study will examine the scientific, technical, environmental and human health risks of uranium mining, milling and processing in Virginia. Its findings are due in 2011.

Virginia has had a moratorium on uranium mining since 1982. Before uranium can be mined in Virginia, the General Assembly would have to lift the ban.
