Since 1987, the Labor Department has not allowed paid firefighters to volunteer in the same city or county they work in. That rule was overturned a few months ago.
And Rockingham County is the only place in Virginia taking advantage.
Now Rockingham's 38 paid firefighters will be able to volunteer at any company in the county. Chief Robbie Symons is concerned about liability and coercion, but he says it's a good step for the area.
"We don't want to get into a position where a lot of places are that don't have enough volunteers so we're trying to be proactive as a whole department," Chief Robbie Symons says.
Symons isn't sure how many paid firefighters will want to volunteer.
