VDOT Cameras Show Road Conditions

Monday was a foggy day on Afton Mountain. But now you don't have to take Interstate 64 to find that out.

You can just check the Web site Trafficland.com. The site now features images from four VDOT Web cams at various Valley locations.

In addition to a camera on I-64 atop Afton Mountain, VDOT has also installed three along I-81 at the New Market, Woodstock, and Strasburg exits.

The images are updated on the website every five seconds.

VDOT first announced the project and the four test locations last October. Spokesman Eric Gorton said Monday that the plan is to eventually install roughly 40 cameras along the interstates in the Staunton District, which stretches from Frederick County to Rockbridge County.

Gorton says most of the cameras will be put along Interstate 81, with a few along I-64 and I-66.

In addition to the web, the cameras will also be monitored at a soon-to-be-complete Smart Traffic Center at VDOT's Staunton office.
