Residents in The Valley are urged to avoid eating fish from the South River.

National park officials and state health officials held a town hall meeting about mercury pollution Thursday night at the Augusta County Government Center in Verona.

Officials said Virginia is behind other states when it comes to laws about mercury prevention from power plants.

Residents were warned to avoid eating fish from the South River, except for stocked trout, because of mercury levels in the water.
