Virginia Blood Services has quarantined a portion of its blood supply after a surgery patient died at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Virginia Blood Services spokeswoman Laura Cameron says two other patients have contracted fever reactions in recent days and the organization is investigating the possibility that some blood supplies were contaminated by bacteria.
Cameron says they're suggesting that hospitals perform no transfusions unless it is a matter of life and death, until the investigation is complete.
Virginia Blood Services supplies blood for hospitals in Richmond, Charlottesville, Hopewell, South Hill, Farmville, Lexington, Staunton and Waynesboro.
