The federal government has put the finishing touches on its budget for next year, and their plans include some great news for Valley battlefields.
The budget includes $2 million in federal funding for the Shenandoah Valley battlefields district. A large chunk of that money will go to preserving land. The rest will go to management and programs at the battle sites.
Officials with the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Association say the money will go a long way to helping the area become a premier destination for learning about civil war history.
"The civil war sites coupled with the caverns and the mountains and the vineyards, there are a lot of tourist opportunities here," says Howard Kittell, Executive Director of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation.
Officials say that strong tourism will help the area make money from every dollar spent preserving battlefields.
