Authorities say she died from a gunshot, but they wouldn't say if she had been otherwise assaulted.
Short's body was found last Wednesday in the woods of Rockingham County, North Carolina. It's about 30 miles from her Bassett home.
On Aug. 15, her parents were found shot to death and Jennifer was missing. Henry County Sheriff Frank Cassell said it's a case close to his heart.
"I am saddened, I am heartbroken for this little girl and for her family, but at least it must be important to them, it is to me, to know that she's not out here somewhere still being abused," Sheriff Frank Cassell said.
Investigators don't have a suspect, but they are planning to talk to the owner of a mobile home near where the remains were found.
Nine maps were taken from Garrison Bowman's home, including one which was marked to show the location of Jennifer Short's house.
According to an affidavit Bowman had threatened to kill a Virginia man in a dispute over moving the mobile home. Michael Short owned a mobile home moving business.
Bowman is in Canada, but authorities are tracking him down. They are not calling him a suspect.
