Officials in Waynesboro were expecting a big turnout Tuesday in large part because of the referendum ballot.
As off 11 Tuesday morning, the election officials at the Waynesboro library had had 500 people come in and vote. Even smaller locations reported a large number of voters.
They say the numbers are above what they thought they'd have.
The referendum ballot with five yes or no questions about projects in the city is the main reason so many residents are turning out to vote.
"It's been fairly steady all morning. I think it's higher than normal general assembly race and it's because, I think, of the five referendum questions."
City officials say they do hope to know by Tuesday night if the five referendum items do get passed.
