Rescue groups have an extra day to take custody of fighting dogs seized from the rural Virginia property of NFL quarterback Michael Vick.

A spokesman for court-appointed guardian Rebecca Huss says Monday's deadline has been extended 24 hours because of Veterans Day holiday.

He says only established rescue groups can apply to Huss to place or euthanize the 48 pit bulls seized from Vick's Bad Newz Kennels. He adds, applications sent through the mail must be received by Tuesday.

Once all the applications are received, officials will inspect the sites where the dogs would be housed.

Huss is an animal law expert and professor at Valparaiso University law school. A federal judge appointed her to oversee the dogs, which have been held in Virginia since April.

Vick and three co-defendants pleaded guilty to a federal dogfighting charge and are to be sentenced in December.

Vick and his co-defendants still face state charges in Surry County.
