James Madison University has unveiled new plans for Veterans Memorial Stadium, but as we pause to honor our veterans Monday, we learn more about this project than just the new fields.

The new stadium will have a larger memorial, which will include veterans who fought in all foreign wars, not just World War II.

Jim Hughes is not a typical shoe repairman because he's also a Vietnam Veteran. He will be honored at the newly renovated Veterans Memorial Stadium.

"I think people are going to be more aware. For years and years people drove by and said 'oh, that's the ball stadium.' It wasn't until 1997 we finally got the words put on the stadium," says Hughes.

"If they do it in a way where the original plaque is the focal point and then World War I, then Korea, Vietnam and everything else, but as long as they don't take away from what it originally meant and why it was built originally," says Hughes.

The announcement came from JMU on Veteran's Day. There will be more than just major changes made to the fields, because JMU spokeperson Don Egle says the plans also include visitor considerations.

"When they enter, you'll be seeing the enhanced memorial," says Egle. "The new plans will probably address the stadium in a reversed format where people won't be looking into the sun and home plate will be closer to Memorial Hall."

School officials stressed the significance of the memorial, and war veterans like Hughes say maybe now people will recognize it's importance to the community.

"By more people using it, then people will be reminded about what it's about and what it's for," says Hughes.

The university worked closely with several veterans' groups and the city of Harrisonburg for months before making the announcement. The project is still in it's early architectural phase, but they say the memorial will definitely be the main piece of the new facility.
