Several groups, led by the Virginia Farm Bureau, are kicking off a statewide food drive.
The Autumn Harvest food drive starts Monday and runs through Oct. 12. The farm bureau's women's committee hopes to raise one million pounds of food at the state's seven regional food banks, based in Fredericksburg, Lorton, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, Roanoke and Verona.
According to the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, food banks helped feed 1.5 million people in Virginia last year. Forty percent of the food bank clients are under 18, and 12 percent are elderly.
The federation reports that 40 percent of food bank client households in the state have at least one person working.
Virginia food banks distribute food through 2,500 agencies, such as Head Start programs, Boys and Girls clubs and churches.
