Hundreds of people gathered on Staunton streets Monday night to enjoy the Christmas parade. The parade was almost interrupted just minutes before it got underway when police say a drunk driver burst through a barricade.

Police say a 50-year-old Donna M. Young, of Staunton, refused to pull over her vehicle, and ran through some blockades at the corner of Lewis and Johnson streets, on the parade route.

Then, police say the woman's vehicle ran into a grandmother who was pushing a stroller with her infant grandchild inside. The grandmother and infant were both taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Young was eventually arrested. She faces charges of hit and run, DUI, and eluding police. The accident happened 15 minutes before the parade was slated to start.

Despite the nearby accident and the freezing weather, the parade went forward. It featured a spectacle of lights, vehicles, community organizations, bands, and floats.

Some WHSV reporters also attended to hand out candy and gather toys for the Toy Convoy.
