A Verona grandmother and her two young granddaughters are recovering Tuesday night after they were struck by a drunk driver just before the start of the Staunton Christmas parade Monday.
The parade was about to start Monday night when Terry Glenn says she felt something push her from behind.
She says, "It just spun me, put me off the ground and spun me around, and I just went down and my granddaughter was beside me because I was holding her."
Glenn was pushing her 11-month-old granddaughter in a stroller. A three and a half year old was also standing next to her. The stroller was the first thing to be hit by the vehicle.
Glenn says, "The lady hit the stroller and the cop said he seen it go up in the air, and hit the wall on the side of the building."
Glenn and her family were hit by 50-year-old Donna Young who police say was driving drunk. Young broke through a police barricade before striking the Glenn family. Glenn and her daughter say justice must be done.
She says, "She's gonna have to pay. There’s just too much of this going around."
Young is being charged with hit and run, DUI, eluding police and several other charges. Glenn says she and her granddaughters are lucky to be alive.
"I thank God, I thanked him so many times last night for the babies," says Glenn. "I didn't care about myself, I just was worried about the babies, the babies, I just kept saying, where's the babies?"
Glenn survived the accident with back pain, which is aggravated by a back injury she suffered years ago. One of her granddaughters may have suffered a concussion while the other one only had minor cuts and bruises.
