What a season it has been for the Buffalo Gap Bison. First, they became district champs, then regional champs, and now state champs.
On Saturday, the boys went out in grand fashion, and that was goal apparent well before kick-off at Salem's City Stadium. However, the Bison had to break a tough green wave from Clintwood to make it happen.
Clintwood came out bombing in the first quarter, as Heath Counts connects with Ryan Lyle for a 20 yard gain, put the Greenwave at mid-field.
But the tide turned when Counts' pass went off his receiver's hands and into the hands of Gap's Michael Johnson, and the Bison were back in business.
The Gap turned to Pickle Nucklos who blasted up the middle for 31 yards. However, near the goal line, quarterback Travis Morris calls his own number, and sweep in for the score that put the Bison 7-0.
Clintwood responded on the next series, and near the Bison goal line, Derek Robbins bowls in to tie the game at seven.
Later in the second, Clintwood came back in the red zone. This time Counts faked the hand off, and went up top to Nick Robinson, who went in for the tally, but the Waves miss the point after, bringing it to 13-7 Clintwood.
Then just before halftime, Morris led the Gap on a last minute drive, and capped it by rolling right, throwing left, and hitting Josh Wenger for the score. Ian Rosenfeld delivered on the extra point, and Gap went into halftime up 14-13.
At the start of the third quarter, the Bison take command of the game, as Morris faked to Nucklos, then raced 65 yards down the sidelines for the score, and the Gap led 21-13.
The 4th quarter became Pickle time, as Nucklos and the Gap offensive line muscle down the clock and the Clintwood defense, and Nucklos ended the drive with a ten yard touchdown ramble. He finished with 208 yards on the day, as the Bison sealed sweet victory winning 28-19.
