The Virginia Department of Transportation's vision of widening Port Republic Road in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County was put on paper for people to see Tuesday night.

The $28 million project is intended to accommodate increasing traffic. But the viewing brought up some issues for residents who live along the road. Not only is Port Republic Road going to be widened, adding another lane on each side up through Boyers Road, but the project proposal also includes a southeast connector that may affect some water wells for residents.

Maps of the project displayed at Stone Spring Elementary showed a widened Port Republic Road, including a curb, gutters and even pedestrian and bicycle lanes.

The proposed project will potentially require three families to relocate. One home owner, Anna Jameson, says she doesn't want to have to move, but part of the southeast connector would cause her to lose her well water.

"But they do have to get us water. They can't leave us without water, and the well that's there now, that is our only means of water. So they will have to get us water. Either they drill us another well or maybe get county water in somehow," said Jameson.

In ten days, the public comment period will close and VDOT will review all the comments and suggestions submitted by citizens. After that, the road plan will go up for approval. If everything goes as planned, advertisements for constructions will go up late in 2009.
