Garret Moore, the new administrator for the VDOT Staunton District, got up to speed on the road issues in the county. There are eight prioritized road projects on the table.
"The most immediate one that's come to my attention and that we are working on now is the hospital and the concerns with Route 659," said Moore.
That's Port Republic Road. The other projects rounding out the top three of the list is connecting Route 42 to Route 11 in Bridgewater and improving Route 33 from Harrisonburg to Elkton. But money is constantly a factor in road improvement
"A steady funding stream makes it a lot easier to plan those sorts of things because you are not in the stop and go process," said Moore.
Moore recognizes the havoc of not knowing when roads will be improved or not.
"It's tough on property owners if they have to deal with what will I do with my property and it's probably one of our biggest things we need to be sensitive to," said Moore.
But right now they've just gotta work from the top down. Moore is not just concerned with congestion but also safety. And as far as knowing about Port Republic becoming a primary road, it's still on the table and the timeframe will be known soon.
