Exploratory drilling into a rich uranium deposit in Southside Virginia is under way.

Last week, contractors brought samples to the surface at Coles Hill East of Chatham. About 20 holes ultimately will be drilled.

Virginia Uranium Incorporated owner Walter Coles says exploratory drilling is necessary to raise money to pay for a study to determine if uranium mining is safe. Such a study is necessary if a state moratorium on mining uranium is ever to be lifted.

Governor Tim Kaine wants to ease the ban in an effort to help Virginia become more energy independent. Even if the state lifted its moratorium, it could take at least a decade to start a mining and milling operation in the Chatham area.

The uranium deposit under Pittsylvania County is estimated at up to 110 million pounds, and is believed to be the largest in North America. By some estimates, the deposit is worth billions.
