Residents Concerned About New Development

Residents of Harrisonburg's Forest Hills community have concerns about a widely publicized project that could put a civic center and shopping mall near their backyard.

They say the land at Neff and Port Republic is zoned for residential use, not commercial. It's something they stressed to Harrisonburg's City Council in a letter Tuesday night. The group says they are not opposed to commercial development in the area, they simply want that development to fit in with existing neighborhoods.

"This land is zoned R-1 and we would like to see it stay at least within the bounds of what was planned and contemplated for this property," said Forest Hills resident Hobey Bauhan. "We just wanted to take the opportunity to express our concerns early on to the council members."

Residents say they would like more information on the project. Right now they have no formal plans to fight the development.
