The money debate is over -- or so it's been deemed, "officially." On Thursday night, Staunton City Council voted on an ordinance to detail who's in charge of what when it comes to the Queen City's money.
Council voted to transfer responsibility for collecting utility payments from the Treasurer's office to the Department of Finance. The measure was passed by council on a 5-to-1 vote.
In recent weeks the issue brought mass debate from city residents, many who felt the Treasurer, an elected official, should retain that responsibility.
Mayor John Avoli, at Thursday night's meeting, noted that "the ordinance is not designed to restrict the duties of the Treasurer, but to clarify certain specific and existing financial responsibilities." Regarding all the heated debate, Avoli stated, "it's time to get on with the City's business in a businesslike way."
