Staunton City Council members passed a number of ordinances last night, defining the responsibilities of both the City Treasurer and Finance Director.

"Basically what the city council did last night is confirm in writing by ordinance basically what has been done in the city of Staunton ever since I've been the Mayor," said Mayor John Avoli.

But Treasurer Elnora Hazlett disagrees, saying these ordinances replace her office in the areas of banking services, bond issues and investments.

"This is what an elected Treasurer is here for, the checks and balances between an elected official and the city government," said Hazlett.

Hazlett says she has sought out legal council to contest the changes.
