The Harrisonburg school system says it needs some help with its booming English as a second language population.
Out of its 4,029, almost 1,200 speak English as a second language.
The school board is asking the governor and general assembly to dramatically increase state funding for localities that are seeing a vast increase in ESL students.
The board also wants ESL students to be graded on their achievement and not just mastery of the English language.
The school board has also cut its choices in half regarding kindergarten through eighth grade configuration.
It has not eliminated the citywide fourth and fifth grade school option.
