A prolonged slump: that's what recent studies suggest is happening to armed forces recruiting across the country.

With the army looking to expand its recruitment by 30,000 soldiers, it is behind schedule.

However in Staunton they are not only bucking that trend, they're actually reversing it.

"In the last few months, and in this general area, recruiting has been very well," said Sgt. Jathan Day of Staunton's Army Recruiting Station.

Not only is recruitment up overall in the Valley, that includes demographics that have plummeted nationally, like women.

"Well actually no, in this area we've seen an increase in the number of females who are enlisting," said Day.

Those numbers have served to lift Staunton into the top 10th percentile in America.
