Private Funding May Solve Construction Backups

Supporters say private projects keep costs down and can get the job done more quickly, but opponents say drivers on such roads will probably have to pay tolls.

A law was passed ten years ago to encourage more privately-built roads, but so far only one project has been completed: the Pocahontas Parkway near Richmond.

AAA Mid-Atlantic has traditionally opposed such projects, but is now coming around to the idea thanks to gridlock in Northern Virginia.
