The Humane Society of the United States announced a campaign offering up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person involved in dogfighting in Georgia.

The effort to stop dogfighting gained new prominence when suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was convicted of running a dogfighting operation in Virginia.

Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison on a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge.

John Goodwin is manager of animal fighting for the society. He says the reward for tips and keeping tipsters anonymous will help bring people out of the woodwork to report dogfighting.

The reward was previously $2,500. The society said an Atlanta corporate security agency will set up a toll-free hot line for dogfighting reports and forward the tips to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
