WHSV-TV3 is proud to announce that all three of its major networks are now available to DirecTV viewers in Rockingham and Augusta counties in Virginia and Pendleton County in West Virginia. WHSV-TV3, The Valley’s FOX and myValley have been added to the DirecTV channel lineup.

WHSV-TV3 will be available on channel three, while the Valley's FOX will be on 49, myValley on 50 and WVPT on 51. However, current DirecTV customers who secured service and equipment before November 15, 2007 will likely require an equipment upgrade. This is a simple process that can be done by calling 1-866-607-0724.

“Finally, people who have had such a strong desire to get WHSV, especially local news, weather and sports, will be able to get the station,” says Tracey Jones, Vice-President and General Manager of WHSV.

Those who wish to add DirecTV service or switch from another satellite provider can do so at a number of area retailers, or by visiting DirecTV online at the link below.

WHSV-TV3 has been serving the Shenandoah Valley and Potomac Highlands for more than 50 years, bringing viewers news, weather and entertainment. The Valley’s FOX and myValley went on the air in the spring of 2007. The Valley’s FOX is home to NASCAR, NFL football, Major League baseball and more while Fox’s hit programming includes American Idol.

MyValley is a channel built to accommodate viewers on the go. It features re-airings of WHSV News throughout the day, plus shows like Oprah at 10 p.m. when busy viewers have time to watch them.

Before 1999, satellite television providers like DirecTV and DISH Network were not allowed to retransmit local television channels over satellite. Congressman Bob Goodlatte was instrumental in getting a law passed that allowed satellite companies to provide local channels. He also authored a bill to provide loan guarantees to satellite companies who provide this local service, which was signed into law, and he has continued to encourage the rollout of more local television channels via satellite through numerous pieces of legislation since that time.

“I have been working very closely with DirecTV for years now to bring local television stations via satellite to consumers in this market,” says Goodlatte. “I am extremely pleased to announce DirecTV’s decision to bring local channels to consumers here. Finally, consumers in these rural areas, often beyond the reach of cable lines, will have access to local programming and emergency news and information via satellite.”

WHSV is owned by Gray Television, Inc. (NYSE: GTN), a television broadcast company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, whose primary mission is to provide quality news and entertainment services to the local markets in which the Company operates. Gray currently operates 36 television stations serving 30 markets. In addition, Gray currently operates 39 digital secondary channels.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ARE THERE ANY PLANS FOR WHSV TO ADD A NBC AND A CBS AFFILIATE THAT WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO DIRECTV CUSTOMERS? CURRENTLY IF WE DESIRE TO SEE THESE NETWORKS WE MUST SUBMIT A WAIVER TO GET THESE STATIONS FROM NY OR LA. ALTHOUGH I CAN WATCH MY FAVORITE SHOWS ON THESE NETWORKS, IT IS NOT THE SAME AS HAVING NBC, AND CBS LOCAL STATIONS.

I AM GLAD TO GET WHSV FINALLY ON DIRECTV, HOWEVER WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF WHSV GETTING NBC, AND CBS AFFILIATES IN THE NEAR FUTURE?

I'm still waiting on getting WHSV TV-3 in Shenandoah Co. I'm tired of trying to watch the news that I grew up with through a snowy picture.

what about Dishnetwork

This is a Waste. You can recieve WHSV aready in digital format with an Antenna. Why would you give your HDTV networks out of NY to get WHSV that is NOT in HD. WHSV needs to team up with WVIR in Charlotesville to bring us a full range of networks in HD for our community.

Good to see TV 3 continuing to grow. The General Manager has vision. That's sometimes a rarity in this business. Rock on H'bg!

I too had been waiting to get local network, but not willing to give up additional channels

This all sounds wonderful until i called directv last night and found out i would lose my fox & cbs. with football season going on i would be in the doghouse forever. plus they told me i would have to upgrade my equipment which for 3 receivers it would cost 102.90 and it had to be paid up front. I have been with directv for over 5 years and like their service. just dont like not getting local channels. but if i have to lose 2 other networks just to get one i am sorry whsv. and in my area the only channel available with an antenna is channel 29 nbc. unfortantly i will have to stay with that for now. and continue to get my local news online.

The Direct TV story sounds great. Now for the "fine print". If you get TV 3, your local ABC affiliate, you will have to give up your other networks. So you can watch TV 3, but you will have no NBC or CBS. I don't think it is worth the trade off.

Finally! We have DirecTV and have wanted to get WHSV for years. Bunny ears have not worked on our TV because we are too close to the mountain. If I want local news I have to go on line. I plan to call the DirecTV right away to get the upgrade.

I called Directv today. Just to let you know...if you are currently getting the major networks out of New York and sign up for the package to get WHSV, which is ABC and will include Fox, you will no longer be able to get the other networks, NBC or CBS. They said when you sign up for local network you can't have the waiver or whatever it is for networks outside your area, even if yours does not include all networks. Sorry WHSV, I for one am not willing to give up the other two!!! What a disappointment!!!!

Lisa, the first reciever and the satelite dish is free if you already have directv. The second reciever is a 49.99 charge. If you get rid of the New York part you have been getting charged for then it should be no biggy. The upgrade also allows for HDTV if that matters. Of course to have that added you pay alittle more.

I was so excited to learn that I could finally watch TV3 only to find out that I have to buy two new recievers and a new statelite, and pay $5 more a month just to get TV 3. This is very frustrating when we live right down the street from the station! I have no idea what goes on locally because I have to watch New York news!

It is highly unlikely that DISH will ever carry the local stations. Switch to DirecTV and you could probably get everything in a week or less. Do the refer a friend thing referenced above.

Chris, yes you can get HD channels. I called this am to Direct TV and my whole system has to be upgraded. You get a new dish(it is larger), one new reciever that is HD ready you just have to subscribe and the free installation. The down side is for extra recievers there is a charge of 49.99. Even so I'm gettin my upgrade and locals, about time. If you don't already have Directtv I believe the rep told me it is a 99.99 charge. Find someone who does have Directtv and do the refer a friend thing and you get 50 bucks as well has your friend who already has Directtv.

Any idea how long it will take to make locals available on DISH?

Posted by: Chris Housden Location: elkton on Jan 17, 2008 at 08:01 AM
WOO HOO! Now I can get a sat. dish, get WHSV w/o an antenna, and FINALLY get rid of Comcast! I held onto Comcast just because I like my local news, but now it's like someone just removed handcuffs from me! Can I also get the HD channels?

Posted by: Scott Location: McGaheysville on Jan 16, 2008 at 11:05 PM
Because Dish Network customers don't proofread their comments.....

Posted by: Barbara Helmick Location: Churchville Va. on Jan 16, 2008 at 06:34 PM
Why can't Dish Network costemers get this?
