A Fairfax County man charged with murdering his mother may get an insanity defense. Jayant Kadian is accused of stabbing his mother, whose body was found by her husband last Thursday in their Great Falls home.
Some relatives were in tears as Kadian appeared in Fairfax County court [Monday.] Those family members later declined to talk to reporters outside.
Earlier, they met with Kadian's lawyers to discuss a possible mental illness defense. The family is now working to obtain the 20-year-old's medical records. Kadian reportedly had legal issues, including drug charges, and was supposed to meet with a therapist on the day of the killing.
He was arrested in Harrisonburg on Friday at James Madison University, where he was a former student. A preliminary hearing is now set for May 2.
