Record Breaking and Safe

It could be the heat. It could be the new slide. But, Westover pool in Harrisonburg has been jam packed. It had a record number of 1,262 visitors.

"It's pretty crazy," said Lifeguard Amanda Hochstetler. "Especially just keeping control and having them listen to you.”

She says it can be draining concentrating on hundreds of heads at one time, “It's important not to goof around a pool because it's a really dangerous place. It's tough to know if they're really goofing off.”

But even though the pool is breaking attendance records, it's not breaking laws.

Fire codes say Westover pool can hold about 2000. But Moore says that's way more than they would ever feel safe to accept.

Keeping an eye out on the children isn't the only concern. An increased bather load can really eat up chlorine.

They take big crowds into consideration when preparing for the day by increasing the chlorine to the highest safe limit, but that's not all.

They also have a computer that monitors the effectiveness of the chlorine and the PH levels.

As a back up, the pool water is tested manually throughout the day.
