Former West Virginia football coach Rich Rodriguez has filed a $1.5-million letter of credit with a federal court in Clarksburg, the maximum he says he could possibly owe WVU.

His legal team says Tuesday's filing shows Rodriguez is willing to make a good-faith gesture toward resolving matters.

Rodriguez left West Virginia for the head coaching job at Michigan in December. WVU is suing him over a $4-million buyout clause in his contract. Each side accuses the other of breaching the terms of that contract.

Rodriguez claims WVU failed to honor verbal promises, including one that his buyout might be eliminated. WVU denies such a promise was ever made.

WVU attorney Jeff Wakefield says Rodriguez owes the school $4 million under contract terms in effect at the time of his resignation.

But Rodriguez's attorney, Marv Robon, says the courts will decide which contract provisions were in effect and how much, if anything, he should pay WVU.
