A man who pleaded no contest to animal cruelty in Jefferson County, West Virgina last August has been named as one of the owners of 48 neglected horses seized from a Middleburg, Virginia, farm last week.

The West Virginia charge against Dennis Danley stemmed from the discovery of mares with exposed rib cages and spines at a farm near Charles Town, West Virginia.

As part of his sentence in that case, the 55-year-old Charles Town horse trainer was barred from owning horses for five years.

Danley tells The Washington Post he is not an owner of the horses seized from the farm in Middleburg. He says he worked there as a trainer. And he says when he last saw the horses 2.5 weeks ago they were in good condition.

Danley is scheduled to appear Wednesday before a Loudoun, Virginia, General District court judge.

He's one of three people named in court records as owners of the Virginia horses. The others are Donald Cutshaw and Pablo Cosme.

The judge will decide Wednesday whether the three are fit to provide for and own the horses.
