297 Rockingham County soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice when they answered the called to war in 1861. Sunday, that sacrifice was honored.
A Confederate memorial service took place at the Woodbine Cemetery where more than 200 soldiers are buried. A ceremony of laying flowers and reading the names of Confederate Veterans followed a procession from the Rockingham County Courthouse.
"Rockingham County has always responded to Virginia and their country's call for soldiers," says John Marr, IV, with the Heritage Committee of the Sons Camp.
"They have overwhelming always sent soldiers to the conflicts that America has fought." Twenty-five hundred Rockingham County soldiers served in the Civil War.
