Renovations on two Staunton elementary schools will cost the city more than expected.
Staunton Superintendent Harry Lunsford says the low bids for work at Ware and McSwain elementary schools came in much higher than projected.
He says he is fairly surprised at how high the bids were, however they are in line with the current market for similar projects.
School officials have worked for three weeks with the potential contractor to lower those costs.
They have been successful in reducing potential expenditures by about $1.5 million.
That means the projects would come in at more than $18 million.
