One woman died and two Shenandoah University students were critically injured in an 11-vehicle accident on Interstate 81 in Winchester.
Virginia State Police say the crash happened at about 6 p.m. Wednesday at the US Route 50 ramp onto northbound I-81.
Spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell says several vehicles that could not merge into interstate traffic stopped along the shoulder. Police believe another car then merged quickly onto the interstate and cut off a tractor-trailer. The truck driver lost control of the rig and struck several cars.
One of the victims, 19-year-old Angela Beatley of Winchester, was killed.
Nineteen-year-old Kendra Miller of Bunker Hill, West Virginia, and 19-year-old Brenda Wilson of Inwood, West Virginia, were critically injured when the truck hit the car they were in.
