There are plans to turn over DMV duties to local Commissioners of Revenue. And it's going to happen first in Shenandoah County. Starting Jan. 1, drivers won't have to go to Harrisonburg, Winchester or Front Royal to take care of business. They can get their titles and tags at the County Government Center.
Delegate Allen Louderback has a reason for making sure this happens as quickly as possible.
"I really want to try to get some of those DMV employees back on duty. They have the knowledge and skills. There's no reason to go out and train new people when we have these people qualified."
Louderback says it's likely too soon for local commissioners to handle drivers' licenses. But he's working with state DMV officials to hammer out the details of the turnover.
