A Loudoun County, Virginia judge has set bond at $5,000 for a man charged with 48 counts of animal cruelty.

Charles Town, W.Va., horse trainer Dennis Danley was indicted Monday. The charges are in connection with the seizure of four dozen thoroughbreds by officials last month from a farm in the Middleburg, Virginia area. The animals were severely malnourished and were found to be without drinking water.

Danley says he stopped working on the farm in November, owned no horses and isn't responsible for their condition. He is due back in court March 14.

Danley pleaded no contest last year to one count of animal cruelty in Jefferson County, West Virginia, and was barred from owning horses for five years.
