A Stuarts Draft teen-ager who beat his grandmother to death with a baseball bat has been found innocent of murder by reason of insanity.
Augusta County prosecutors say that according to Monday’s ruling, 19-year-old Joseph Goldsworthy will be evaluated by state mental health officials and placed in a mental institution in about two weeks.
Police arrested Goldsworthy last December as he wandered shirtless along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
On the same day, authorities found the bludgeoned body of 70-year-old Willie Mae Denny inside her home, where Goldsworthy lived with her.
A Western State Hospital neuropsychiatrist testified Goldsworthy is a schizophrenic whose condition deteriorated in the months leading up to the killing.
