A 14-year-old California boy is charged with attempted murder in the shooting of a 15-year-old classmate who has been declared brain dead.

Prosecutors have filed a hate-crime enhancement with the attempted murder count. They would not say why, but several classmates said victim Lawrence King sometimes wore makeup, high heels and other feminine attire.

Police say King was shot in the head during a class at E.O. Green Junior High in Oxnard, with more than 20 other students in the room at the time.

Prosecutors want the unidentified suspect tried as an adult and expect to upgrade the charges after King is taken off a ventilator for organ donation.
