Officials say the gunman in Thursday's deadly shooting at Northern Illinois University has been identified as a 27-year-old former graduate student.

An official at the university tells The Associated Press his name is Steven Kazmierczak. He was not currently enrolled, but had been a graduate student in sociology as recently as last spring. The school's president, John Peters, says there are no records of Kazmierczak having been arrested or having any other contact with police while attending Northern Illinois.

The gunman opened fire in a lecture hall. The DeKalb County coroner says five people were killed, while 15 others were wounded in the attack. Officials say the shooter then killed himself.
