Holiday DUI's Are Down

Despite the fact that many people drink alcohol at Christmas parties, DUI's are actually down in the Valley this season.

The Harrisonburg Police Department is stepping up its patrol of the area to keep holiday drivers safe. It's sober driver campaigns and free taxi rides home also keep drinkers off the roads.

Crime Prevention Officer Scott Dinkel explains, "People that normally wouldn't use designated drivers now will because they know that there's increased enforcement efforts, whether it be sobriety check points or just more patrol."

If you are hosting a holiday party, be sure to follow these guidelines:

  • Collect car keys of guests when they arrive
  • Provide non-alcoholic beverages and activities
  • Always serve food when serving alcohol
  • Don't rush to refill guests' glasses
  • Stop serving alcohol early

These tips will ensure everyone at your holiday gathering has a fun and safe time.
