A program that provides shelter for the homeless is coming to an end for the season, but its numbers are growing, and the shelter will re-open in Novemeber.

The Harrisonburg and Rockingham Thermal Shelter, or HARTS, provides a place for homeless people to spend the night and eat hot meals.

The executive director, Brooke Rogers, says the number of homeless people spending the night has grown to about 15 people a night. She sees a real need for a program like this to continue next year.

"The plan is to begin again in November with the possibility of offering shelter this summer during some really hot nights, but that's still under consideration depending on how much funding we receive," says Rogers.

Rogers says nearly 15 churches participated in the program and volunteers average about 400 hours of service a week.
