A James Madison University student is facing ten years in jail after police allegedly discovered supplies for making fake identification cards in his dorm room.

Local bars and restaurants say they have to be constantly on the lookout because of the steady flow of fake IDs. While Senior Katherine Carr says she never used an ID, she says it wasn't hard to find someone who did.

"I didn't see that many people getting caught in Harrisonburg. They'd get caught in other cities, but the people I knew in Harrisonburg that had one never got caught," says Carr.

Bars say it's a problem they're all fighting. Some fakes are easy to spot. Others have bad barcodes.

"We got a Massachusetts ID with Larry Bird's information on it," says Rocktown Grill Manager Scott Troutman.

He says they are on the lookout for surges of similar IDs as each semester starts.

"It means that someone locally is making them, and they only have the technology to make that certain state, and you can tell it's coming from somewhere locally because you'll see a lot of them," says Troutman.

He says that he sees many more fake IDs in Harrisonburg because it’s a college town. He says they have to keep up with searching techniques because fake ID makers use better technology.

Bars have ID books to compare the IDs to, but many bars are upping their technology.

"At a previous bar I worked at, they had an ID scanner and we used it to catch a lot of IDs," says Troutman. "A lot of times people will put a different barcode on the back and that's how we caught a lot."

JMU says it tries to fight the problem by holding educational programs for students who live on campus.
