Virginia State Police have confirmed a motorcyclist has died after a crash along the 3100 block of Indian Trail Road in Keezletown.

Police said Robert Wayne Fielding, 46, was ejected from his motorcycle moments after hitting a deer.

Police were called to the scene at about 5:30 a.m.

Rescue crews said Fielding, of Harrisonburg, was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

He was driving south down Indian Trail Road on his Harley when he hit a deer that was in the middle of the road.

Immediately after, he ran off the road into a ditch before being ejected.

He was pronounced dead at the scene when state police arrived.

Trooper Kenneth Howard with Virginia State Police said it was dark outside at the time of the accident, and there were no markings on the road.

He encourages everyone to pay extra attention when driving in that area.

"The alignment of the road is straight-leveled. We don't know at this point if speed had anything to do with it, but we just always caution people that this is an agricultural area with a lot of wildlife, and people need to be careful and slow down. Especially in the mornings when it's foggy outside," said Trooper Howard.

Police said the man's body was found next to his motorcycle on the road by a person heading to work.

That person tried to do CPR and then called crews for help.
