A woman accused of booking call girls in the alleged Spitzer prostitution ring is a 1993 graduate of Harrisonburg High School. A former classmate and teacher both say they were shocked to hear the news since they say Tameka Lewis was a very quiet and intelligent individual.
It's a national story with a local tie since Lewis graduated from Harrisonburg High School in 1993. She is accused of acting as the booker for former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer's alleged prostitution ring.
A former Harrisonburg High School student, Kristen Leatherman who now lives out of state, was a cheerleader with Lewis and remembers her as someone who stayed out of trouble.
"Tameka was a quiet, shy, except when she needed to make her voice at cheerleading and have a comment but very sweet. I would say she was a good, all around girl," says Kristen Leatherman.
A former advanced placement U.S. history teacher, Henry Buhl, says Lewis was an honor student who was incredibly bright.
"I remember her mother would come in on parent conference days just to check in and see how she was doing in the course. We never had any problem with her. Everything was good," says Buhl.
However, when the news broke about Lewis's alleged involvement, those who knew her were shocked.
"I was just like, okay, sweet, shy, quiet Tameka? How could this happen?" says Leatherman.
"We all do things maybe we shouldn't from time to time, but then we should come out of it as a better person, and go from there. It's just a shame. That's all it is," says Buhl.
Lewis faces federal charges in the southern district of New York, where she is one of four defendants accused of helping to operate the prostitution ring.
