College move-in season is in full force here in The Valley this weekend. That means an increase in traffic on major highways.
The Virginia State Police took action Saturday to make sure everyone stays safe.
It's called Operation Air, Land and Speed.
Extra troopers have been patrolled Interstates 81, 64 and 95 all day.
It's a proactive move on their part to make sure more patrol cars are visible and that drivers obey the laws.
Their hope is that drivers will be less likely to speed or make erratic lane changes if they think another trooper is around the corner.
"We've had motorists we've spoken with that said it was actually enjoyable to operate their vehicles on the interstate because people are actually going the speed limit," said Sgt. D.J. Edwards. "It's definitely comforting to know that people maybe will think twice before driving recklessly."
Operations like the one Saturday happen anytime more drivers are expected to use the interstate. Sometimes, extra patrols will be stationed for several days.
