A hidden Staunton gem could soon be shining again. City council is set to consider backing plans to refurbish the city's Newtown district.
It was once known as the western gateway to the city. A true gem in the crown of the Queen City, but now it's in a state of disrepair.
Shops on West Beverly are closed. And, homes are shabby and worn. But the Newtown business guild is on a mission - to renew Newtown.
"When the plans for Newtown were set after the civil war. It was like a planned community," Michael Organ of the Newtown business guild. "There were wonderful homes, there were mansions, there were tenant houses, there were some duplexes, a lot of little store fronts that would service that community. And it's gone into disrepair."
Organ says the next six months will be a great time of re-growth for Newtown.
