A revised state Department of Education math policy is up for public comment.
Under the existing policy, which requires four credits of math to graduate from high school, students would have to start with algebra I in ninth grade.
Earlier this month, the state Board of Education revised the policy to allow students to schedule an algebra support course if they are struggling with the standard algebra I class. The supplemental course would count as one math credit.
Spokeswoman Liza Cordeiro says the state board recommends that students take the algebra I and algebra support class at the same time. But she says county school systems can come up with their own scheduling options.
The policy is open for comment until April 14 and a final vote is set for May. If approved, it will go into effect during the 2008-2009 school year.
