ROCKINGHAM COUNTY – One person was seriously injured overnight in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 at the 243 mile marker. At 12:24 a.m. Wednesday, Virginia State Police Trooper B.W. Coleman was called to the scene in the northbound lanes of I-81.

A 2009 Toyota Matrix had just been involved in a crash and became disabled. The Matrix was stopped partially on the left shoulder and partially in the left northbound travel lane. Within minutes of that crash, a northbound tractor-trailer struck the Matrix, which caused the tractor-trailer to overturn across the northbound lanes of I-81 and skid into a 2007 Ford Mustang. The Mustang was stopped in the right shoulder at the time of impact.

The driver of the Matrix, Alexander Berkow, 28, of North Carolina, was not injured in the crash. Berkow was charged with reckless driving for the initial crash.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Fred A. Logan, Jr., 45, of Martinsville, Va., suffered minor injuries in the crash and was treated at the scene.

The driver of the Mustang, Breanna Chaffee of New Hampshire, was not injured in the crash. Her 20-year-old female passenger was transported to Rockingham Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

All northbound lanes of I-81 were reopened by 4:20 a.m.

All lanes are now open on I-81 at mile-marker 243.

Earlier a tractor trailer crash closed two lanes on I-81North at mile-marker 243.

Details on the crash haven't been confirmed by state police yet. WHSV was on the scene overnight. It happened around 12:30 a.m. this morning. The tractor trailer was on its side with lots of damage done to the front.
