Virginia State Police Superintendent Col. Steve Flaherty says evidence recovered at the scenes indicates more than one person was involved in the shooting incidents that took place along Interstate 64 Thursday morning.

VSP is currently investigating more than 50 leads that have been called in since this morning.

Flaherty says reports of gun shots started coming in around ten minutes after midnight and that there is evidence that the shots were fired in three different locations.

"We do have some ballistics work to do," says Flaherty. "We're not going to talk about the type of weapon, but it appears to be the same type of weapon used at all three locations."

During a late morning news conference, Flaherty reported at least four vehicles were struck by bullets. IN an afternoon news realse, VSP reports at least 6 vehicles were hit by bullets.

Two people were also injured during the shootings.

"The wounds are superficial," says Flaherty. "We don't know if they were struck by the bullet or if it was glass fragments."

The two injured motorists were treated at August Medical Center and released. State Police report a male driver drove himself to the hospital for treatment after he was injured. A female motorist was transported by ambulance.

Flaherty says the initial report of shots fired came from mile marker 106 along Interstate 64. Reports from mile marker 114 were also called in.

Flaherty stops short of calling this a "sniper incident."

He does say, "This is a multiple shooting at occupied vehicles and in one case a shooting at an unoccupied vehicle."

Flaherty is advising drivers not to be fearful of driving along Interstate 64, but he is asking motorists to "be observant."

"We haven't identified a motive," says Flaherty. "But we are putting strategies in place to make sure everyone is safe.

I relocted here from Augusta Co. almost two years ago I left behind 2 children and a grand daughter. Scares me terribly that they are there and I use to believe that living there was a safe place to be. Thanx for the updates its all I have from KY and it helps me to know the situation. I hope that the agencies involved find who they are looking for and puts a stop to all our fear ! Many thx for WHSV news coverage!

This is very bad. I hope that this will never happen again. I think that Albemarle County Public Schools did a great thing by having extra resource officers onhand & opening schools late. GREAT JOB POLICE OFFICERS & ANGENCIES WORKING ON THIS CASE!
